Hello 2023
How did you ring in the New Year.... at a party, in church, sleeping, or just quietly hanging out with a glass of wine/champagne? Whatever way you did it, Happy New Year to you! We all may have celebrated differently but many of you probably spent some time writing New Year resolutions. A list of things you want to accomplish for 2023.
Well, let me address the elephant in the room. I am not a fan of New Year resolutions personally, because I make them on the 1st, and then break them on the 2nd. And my sixth sense tells me that many of you do the same. Or maybe say, “ok, I will start tomorrow, or next week, or next month”… you get it. This year, I am saying, “I need a lifestyle change to carry me into the future”. You are probably thinking … “What BS!”, but I have been paying attention to my habits for a while. They are not all bad, but I know I need to make a change in general, if I intend to live a healthy and active life for as many years as the Lord above allows me.
I want to do this so it becomes one of my new habits for the rest of my life. My focus will be on making healthy choices. There will be no list of things to do or deadline dates. All I want to do is think carefully before I act. Think about the outcome of my choices before I put the actions into motion. In other words, think about the food I put in my mouth, and the amount of time I spend holding the remote control.
Studies have shown that “80% of New Year resolutions are broken by the end of February” or earlier in my case. If you want any resolution plan of action to work, consider these tips while you are making your list:
· Set realistic and achievable goals. Very often, people set themselves up for failure from the get go without even knowing it. Stop and think about the baby steps you can take on route to the major plan.
· Make a conscious effort to execute your plan. It could just be a small adjustment to behaviours and/or attitudes that can do the trick. Be mentally aware of everything you do.
· Hold yourself accountable for the success or failure to achieve your goals. Stop blaming other people or situations and circumstance for you blowing it. Remember, you can only depend on yourself to accomplish the objectives you set. Even if you have support, you need to do the work. Supportive people in your corner can cheer you on and encourage you to keep going. However, you have to also be self-motivated to get to the finish line.
· Do not be afraid of failure. It is just opportunity presenting itself so you can regroup, set new goals, and start again. You probably don’t realise this but you are in the drivers’ seat setting your own rules. You answer to no one but yourself. You are the boss in this situation. Be empowered!
· Strategy before activity should be your motto.
Once you find the activity strategy that is working for you, don't keep it to yourself. Share it with people in your life that you think would benefit from your discovery. Others can learn from you and come up with their own plan. This is what life should always be about. People helping people!
Listen folks, my plan for 2023 may not be your cup of tea, but this is what I believe will work for me. I have failed every resolution list in the past, so this is my activity strategy for the rest of my life. I hope that the tips I outlined will help you this year in becoming the improved person you desire. Strategy before Activity!
